The voyage to the top of a mountain has long been seen as a sacred and spiritual pursuit. It's a journey to the unknown heights of the sky, a place of inspiration and peace imagined in the likes of Mount Olympus. We all have our own metaphorical mountains. Whether it's our career, a new way of being that we long for, a physical goal, a habit, or even an addiction that we know we need to break. But these mountains don't beg us to climb them. It's us who willingly take up arms and trek forward. So why do we do it? Why do we push ourselves to climb? As we march toward the snow-capped summit, the air thins, there are fewer people and increased silence, the climate changes, and ultimately, we change. A surprising sense of peace is found in the difficulty of the hike. And perhaps that's the point, and our urge to conquer our own Everest is due to the innate sense of purpose we find in the face of challenges. We climb because we yearn for the transformation that happens along the way. One of the clearest insights about this ascent is that we can't go straight to the peak from the base. We have to acclimate. We have to build resilience and stability. As much as we may think we want to catapult directly to the top, what we really need happens step by step. To scale to great heights, you must put careful energy into how you begin. First is proper preparation, mapping out your route, compiling the right tools, conserving your energy, and ensuring you're well-rested and healthy. And once you take off, strategic energy conservation is more important than pushing yourself. If you want to reach the top, it's unwise to start off sprinting. Keep your mind on the summit, and take every step with that goal in mind. And, as legend has it, the gods are living at the top.
